Testing the Hypothesis Part 2
1. I interviewed 5 students who stayed in Friday night instead of going out with the rest of their peers. Certain college study abroad students aren't interested in going out and partying, it's not their thing. They'd much rather immerse themselves in Italian culture and avoid looking like the stereotypical Americans that are looked down upon. Another student said that they would rather travel outside of the country or to a different Italian city over the weekend than go out in Rome.
2. The need for going out is different than the need for drinking. There are hundreds of restaurants all over Rome to drink and experience Italian culture. The students I interviewed would much rather sit at an Italian bar or restaurant and enjoy the presence of Italy.
3. The underlying cause of the outsiders' need is different than those who are inside the boundary. Those outside are looking to experience Italian culture while those inside are looking for a place of acceptance and comfort.
Inside the Boundary Outside the Boundary
1. American study abroad "party-goers" 1. American study abroad students who aren't interested in nightlife
2. An American club 2. Another place to drink
3. There are no clubs in Rome 3. Not their style

Hey Adi,
ReplyDeleteYou make a very interesting point about how partying in Europe versus America is so different. The drinking age here is much higher and party is more binge-style whereas in places like Italy it is a casual occurrence that appreciating the culture. The boundaries are a little small because it really only applies to people currently in Europe.
