Opportunity Belief
1. An opportunity arises when there is a high demand for a club type scene and none around in the area.
2. There are so many universities in Rome filled with American students studying abroad. What there are few of are clubs like those that Americans are used to. This is most likely a need that has always existed, but I am currently experiencing it abroad. To meet this need, people are going to bars that have "American" music, but aren't getting the experience they are used to. The prototypical customer is an American student between the ages of 18-22 who is studying abroad for the semester/ year who is experiencing homesickness/ culture shock and desires a location where s/he is free to meet people with the same feeling.
3A. Sidney is age 18 studying abroad in St. John's University and will be here for the entire spring semester. She is from New York City.
4A. Sidney is in a sorority and misses going out to her local student bar. It's only the first week of classes and she already feels a need to relieve stress in some way. She has a study schedule on MTW's and is free on Thursday and Friday to explore and let loose. She became aware of the need to have an American bar when she felt a desire to go out and was disheartened to find that it's a lot different from her bar/clubs back home. She is satisfying her solution by going to the Italian bars, but she wants to meet Americans her age. She believes it would be a great idea to create a bar in this area of Rome and that her peers would enjoy it as well.
3B. Carlos is a sophomore student completing his Italian minor at St. John's University in Rome. He is from Miami, but decided to go to Queens, NY to get a degree.
4B. feels that there is an overwhelming presence of American students as he strolls through the piazzas of Rome. He feels as though an American club in the heart of Rome would be a great idea for him and his friends to enjoy their nights when they aren't traveling. His experience in Italian bars haven't been like his experiences back home. He feels judged by the locals as they are more about relaxing and having a drink with friends at a bar, rather than dancing and partying.
3C. Sean Fueguel is a Wagner College student studying abroad with his partnered school at St. John's he is a junior, age 21. He has an Israeli background, and has previously interned abroad in Tel Aviv and enjoyed the nightlife.
4C. Sean's experience abroad in a different city allows for him to feel like something is missing in Rome. He loves both cities but wishes there was a change in the nightlife in Rome. He says that when he interned, a group of students that were part of his program from Wagner College, would repeated go to the same club every weekend. He misses that feeling in Rome. He enjoys Rome's casual drinking culture, but misses the music atmosphere of clubs from home. He hopes to find a local bar that he enjoys, but has asked locals and the one's they recommended haven't satisfied his need.
5. With the varying opinions on this topic, I think this is a great opportunity to take advantage of. People of different ages have agreed a desire for their home clubs and a place to meet other individuals who feel the same. They want a place of no judgments and where they are free to speak English after having to speak Italian for so long. They love the city they chose to study abroad in, but are missing the nightlife of the U.S.
7. My opportunity is intact and student's have agreed and their opinions and thoughts have proved true. It is more accurate now after speaking to several other individuals who share the same belief as me. I believe entrepreneurs should change their ideas based on customer feedback to a point. If you completely change your idea to please people, it won't be something you are proud of. But if you don't, you're losing a whole spectrum of consumers and their needs.
Adi, this is an opportunity that I honestly never would have though of. It is very cool to hear about and read about the experiences of yourself and others who are studying abroad. As an area filled typical American college students I could only imagine the opportunity for a club to prosper over there. I feel like this definitely opportunity that most entrepreneurs would jump on.
ReplyDeleteConsidering how Ive never been abroad I never would have imagines being homesick for the nightlife of where your from would be a thing. I can understand where the feelings for this are coming from but its hard to get a grasp of what an American club is when America is so different depending on where you live and how hard it would be to replicate it elsewhere.
ReplyDeleteAdi,
ReplyDeleteThis is a great idea and opens the potential for a chain of bars spotted throughout common study-abroad locations. A standardized layout and theme that brings back memories of "Collegetown, America" could attract tons of American students in other countries. I like how you acknowledge the fact that you're proud of your idea, but know that in order to succeed as a entrepreneur, you have to be willing to adjust to fit the needs of the customer base.
